Our Roots

Modest Roots Brewing Company began in 2019 by father-and-son team Tom and Bill Milward, after many years brewing small-batch beer in their home garage. With steady encouragement from family, friends, and the supportive brewing community, they opened their first location on Industrial Way in Tyngsborough in May 2022.

Brewing on a 1bbl Bilchmann system, they debuted with four beers that remain part of their core lineup: Suzy is a Headbanger, Mob of Emus, Heart of Glass, and A Blessing of Narwhals. What started as can-only sales quickly grew. Taproom pours began in November 2022, and the team moved from the 1-barrel system to a 3-barrel setup to keep up with demand.

In 2023, Modest Roots expanded into their current and much larger space on Middlesex Road, creating room for more beer, more guests, and a stronger sense of community.

Today, Modest Roots hosts a variety of regular events, offers a Mug Club, and collaborates with both local partners and international friends, including Trouble Brewing in Kildare, Ireland. And true to their name, you can still find one of the Milwards behind the bar, pouring beers with the same down-to-earth spirit the brewery was built on.
